Application and Qualification:
Automatic Qualification. Students who have one of the following accomplishments automatically qualify. Please either fill out the online application below, or submit an printed application form, with payment to complete your application.
- Qualified for AIME.
- Scored top 5% or better in AMC 8.
- Entered the MathCounts State level competition as individual or in a team.
- Top performers in ARML.
- If you have participated and performed well in other Math contests that you believe it's comparable to the above mentioned, please provide detailed information for assessment.
Other Applicants. All OTHER applicants please submit the following information:
- Online Application or Printed Application Form.
- Completed Assessment Test (use this as practice, new one will be available online 2/12/12).
- Recommendation from a Math teacher or mentor.
All Applicants MUST submit the following:
- Personal Essay (Maximum 500 words, typed or neatly handwritten). Here are some suggested topics.
- A 360 degree introduction of me.
- Select a topic in math, science, or an extracurricular activity that particularly interests you. What specifically intrigues you? Be as specific as you can.
- My Math Contest experiences.
- My parents and me.
- Parent Statement (see below).
- A check/money order for the application fee & tuition. Please include the full amount of the fees and tuition in your application package. In case the applicant is not admitted into the program, the tuition will be refunded, minus the $150 administrative fee. The $50 application fee is non-refundable.
Note about the assessment test. The assessment test is mainly for students with little or no prior math competition experience. Students with prior experiences may automatically qualify based on criteria described above. The assessment test is the student's opportunity to demonstrate the willingness to explore advanced mathematics topics and the ability to tackle challenging, non-routine problems. It is not only the raw test score that matters, but the love of mathematics that becomes transparent in the student's application. We do realize, however, that some students who were never exposed to math competitions may feel intimidated to the types of problems in the admission test. This does not mean these students do not have the potential. For this reason, we offer an entry level program for students who are usually good at math and are motivated to be challenged. These students will be admitted based on a recommendation from a math teacher or mentor, and a compelling parent statement detailing the student's math talents, motivation, and grades at school. Students are still required to complete and submit the assessment test for placement purposes.
Note about the Parent's Statement: The parent statement is an effective communication piece to help us understand why you want to send your child to our program, so your child will benefit at an individualized level. Please answer the following questions:
- Please describe your child's academic interests, strengths and weaknesses.
- Please describe your child's personal strengths and weaknesses.
- How do you think your child will respond to this intense academic program?
- Is there anything you would like us to know about your child?
Admission Decision: To help families make their summer plans, Math Zoom will process applications and make decisions on a continuous basis. Upon receipt of your completed application, we will notify you by email within one to two weeks. Please contact us by email if you are not notified of the decision within two weeks.
